“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” says leadership guru John C. Maxwell.

The dynamic Rev. Dr. Jacqui King (left), Director of Leadership for Congregational Vitality at UM Discipleship Ministries, will help Eastern PA conference and church leaders learn the way to good leadership at a six-hour retreat this Saturday, Oct. 6.

The Leadership Conference & Retreat, sponsored by the Connectional Ministries Office, will happen at Cedarville UMC in Pottstown from 8:30 AM to 3 PM. All members of any ministry leadership boards, councils, committees and teams, at all connectional levels, are invited, indeed urged, to attend. That includes leaders serving on the conference Connectional Table and in districts, mission connections and congregations.

This will be the first such retreat, but it may become annual. Leaders will gather, worship and learn practical leadership skills together during a day apart. “Convening to learn and help one another, committing to effectiveness and change, and solidifying our next steps are all crucial goals,” said the Rev. Anita Powell, Executive Director of Connectional Ministries.

King, a popular, strategic leadership expert and trainer, will help participants discover their leadership identities and roles, and develop spiritual practices that can stimulate creative, values-based visioning. Individuals and teams will engage in conversations that can lead to leadership covenants, commitments, collaboration and ultimately, transformational outcomes.

Four new Discipleship Ministries booklets to help leaders, groups and congregations will be used and discussed as key resources. Part of the denominational agency’s See All the People ministry initiative, the booklets are available online and can be downloaded for reading in preparation for the retreat. They are:

  • Prayer Practice for Disciples: Creating a Life with God
  • Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts 2018
  • Sharing Our Faith and Teaching Beyond Our Walls and
  • Engaging Our Community: A Guide to Seeing All the People.

Registration for this event has been extended until Wednesday, Oct. 3. Register today to benefit from this valuable learning opportunity. The cost in only $10 to cover meals. CEU’s will be available.
