Basic Sexual Ethics

Level 1 (Basic) Sexual Ethics Workshops provide the essential, ethical and legal dimensions of appropriate healthy boundaries for those serving in ministerial roles.  The primary purpose of this workshop is to educate participants on how to incorporate such healthy boundaries into their professional and personal behavior.

The Level 1 (Basic) Workshop is mandatory for all persons seeking certification as candidates in ministry, candidates for ministerial roles and for all other individuals beginning ministerial roles within the Eastern PA Conference.

The Level 1 (Basic) may be taken as a “refresher” workshop (instead of, or in addition to, an Advanced Level Workshop) – in fulfillment of the quadrennium continuing education requirement – by all serving in a ministerial role who have previously completed a Level 1 course.

Other approved courses for BSE requirements:

  • Peninsula-Delaware's comparable BSE course
  • Lancaster Theological Seminary's Boundary Training class (see below)
  • Evangelical Seminary's Boundary Training class (see below)
  • Drew University Theological School's Sexual Ethics course [Drew Sexual Ethics Syllabus Fall 2017]

Searching for a Basic Sexual Ethics course in the near future?  Lancaster Theological Seminary's Boundary Training was approved to fulfill the Board of Ordained Ministry's BSE requirement. Information and a registration form are available here: lancasterseminary.edu/academics/continuing-education/boundary-training.  (Be sure to keep the CEU certificate of completion for you records and to be shared with your DS, DCOM, and/or BOOM as required.)

This course and other Boundary Training courses at LTS and at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown are approved to fulfill the BSE requirement.  Those required to take the training in EPA may also substitute a Pen-Del Basic Sexual Ethics course.

BOOM hopes to approve similar programs at other seminaries in the region to facilitate completion of this requirement.

Course presenters can contact Greg Impink (724-875-9352, greg.impink@gmail.com) to submit curricula for advance approval.

Please note: the course must be PRE-approved by the Board of Ordained Ministry in order to count toward the requirement.  Courses will not be approved retroactively.  Also, Advanced Sexual Ethics courses may be taken before Basic Sexual Ethics courses, but ASE training does not fulfill the BSE requirement.
