Apr 23, 2024

The General Conference of The United Methodist Church is underway in Charlotte, North Carolina, from April 23 to May 3. The denomination’s highest legislative body convenes every four years but last met in full session in 2016. The 2020 session was postponed by the Covid pandemic and daunting international travel challenges. So that delayed session is meeting now in 2024.

Members of the Eastern Pennsylvania (EPA) and Greater New Jersey (GNJ) delegations arrived safely and are actively engaged in proceedings, which began with opening worship Tuesday after 2 p.m.

The first week will offer a mix of plenary sessions, to hear reports and special addresses, and legislative committees to discuss and debate proposed resolutions. Each delegate is assigned to serve on a legislative committee. Resolutions that are approved by committees will be further legislated by the full body next week.
