“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,”
Philippians 2:5b

Dear United Methodists of Eastern Pennsylvania,

It is with great pleasure that I announce that on August 1, 2025, Rev. Dr. Sang Choi will begin serving on loan from the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference to the Eastern Pennsylvania Annual Conference as Interim Associate Superintendent at least until June 30, 2026.

The newly defined role of the Associate Superintendent is to lead and inspire biblical and theological understanding of ministry and mission and to grow the leadership, vitality, and sustainability of congregations. Rev. Dr. Choi will be under the direct supervision of the Dean of the Cabinet, Rev. Dr. Andrew Foster, III.

Rev. Dr. Choi comes to us with over 30 years of pastoral experience in a wide variety of settings. Most recently he has served as a District Superintendent in Western Pennsylvania (WPA). Prior to becoming a District Superintendent he served in a cross racial appointment as lead pastor from 2015-2022 in one of the largest churches in WPA, Christ United Methodist Church: Huntington. He has also served as lead pastor in churches in the city of Erie and the town of Bentleyville, Pennsylvania. In 2001, he was commissioned by the General Board of Global Ministries and WPA to lead a new church start—The Greater Pittsburgh Korean United Methodist Church. He served there until 2004.

On the Conference level, Sang Choi has been the Chairperson of the Commission on Religion and Race and a member of the Episcopacy Committee, Board of Ordained Ministry, and the United Methodist foundation of Western Pennsylvania.

Sang Choi has a passion and giftedness for church vitality, cultural sensitivity, discipleship training, and spiritual discernment for vision and mission. His Doctor of Ministry work was in the area of Church Servant Leadership. He holds degrees from Wesley Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, Drew Theological School, and Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul Korea.

Sang Choi is married to Grace who is a very gifted musician. They are the proud parents of two adult children, Jeannie and Tiffany.

Please join me in praying for Rev. Dr. Choi and Grace as they make this transition to serving in this interim capacity.

Peace and blessings,

Bishop Cynthia Moore-Koikoi
