Eastern PA Conference members in Lancaster County will welcome the Northeastern Jurisdictional Commission on Archives & History for its annual meeting May 8-10, highlighted by a tour of historical UM area sites. “Awakenings” will be the meeting theme, evoking the two, early Great Awakening periods characterized by religious ardor among evangelical Protestant groups, including Lancaster-area groups that later became part of the UMC. The county is home to nearly 80 UM congregations and two official UM Heritage Landmarks: Boehm’s Chapel and Long’s Barn. The visitors will tour those and other venerable venues, including Bethel AME Church (a former Underground Railroad stop), the Ephrata Cloister and First UMC Lancaster. Dr. Mark Draper of Evangelical Seminary will keynote the meeting; and Bishop Peggy Johnson will preach and celebrate Communion at the final worship service. The assembly will meet at the Doubletree Resort in Lancaster.
