The Rev. Joseph H. Murton, V, April 2015

The Rev. Joseph H. Murton, V, of Pottsville, a part-time local pastor in the Eastern PA Conference, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. He was serving Pottsville: Evangelical and Saint Clair-Wade United Methodist churches. He previously served Gilberton UMC for eight years until his retirement in June 2014.

Murton retired in December 2013 after 10 years as Chief of the Pottsville Police Department, the largest law enforcement organization in Schuylkill County. A police officer for 42 years, he was also a fire investigator, a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) counselor and an ambulance volunteer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Sandra L. (Daubert); their sons, Joseph H. Murton VI, husband of Jacqueline, and Robert Murton, husband of Tricia; a daughter, Stacie Murton-Long, wife of David; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his longtime best friend, Harold Kemfort.
