Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry, West Grove UMC

West Grove United Methodist Church in West Grove, PA is hiring a full time Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry. The Director of Children and Youth Ministries is responsible for Christian education at West Grove United Methodist Church. The individual in this role will design and direct discipleship ministry for persons ages birth through young adulthood. The Director will develop and implement the children’s program with preschool-6th graders and the youth program with 7-12th graders. S/he will build relationships with children and volunteers and coordinate execution of programs that nurture children to grow in the Christian faith. Position:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Start date ~June 1, 2018
  • Vacation: 4 weeks per year

Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of Child Abuse and Criminal Background clearances
  • Completion of Healing the Wounds of Racism and Basic Sexual Ethics trainings within 12 months of hire date
  • United Methodist background is not required, but must be supportive of the standards, theology and policy of the larger United Methodist Church

Preferred qualifications

  • Two or more years of successful teaching, either in a public or private school;
  • Experience teaching Sunday School and/or leading children/youth groups;
  • A background of effective leadership and working well with others;
  • Demonstrated success in growing children’s and youth ministries and involving adults in ministry with children and youth;
  • Exhibits a passion for children’s and youth faith development;
  • An engaging and charismatic personality.

Specific tasks:

  • Spiritual Leadership:
    • Foster a safe and engaging ministry environment for children, youth and adults year-round on Sunday mornings, Friday nights, Sunday nights, and other times when programming and/or ministry occurs
    • Recruit, train and support adult volunteers, youth leaders, children’s ministry leaders and Sunday School teachers, all of whom will follow Safe Sanctuaries policies
    • Facilitate Sunday School program; evaluate and select curriculum that promotes key values
    • Welcome, follow up with, and connect families new to or already affiliated with WGUMC
  • Children
    • Design, plan, supervise, and participate in regular children’s programs
    • Plan, organize and lead opportunities for children in worship, mission, service and fellowship, to include, for example: preparing children to take communion, organizing “Mission Possible” events, structuring activities to introduce Bible study to 3rd graders, coordinating children’s choir, coordinating participation in mission and church camps
    • Direct and oversee children’s outreach events, to include, for example: VBS, Easter Eggstravaganza, and Trunk or Treat
  • Youth
    • Lead Youth Sunday School
    • Design, plan, supervise, and participate in regular youth programs; include a Bible study component to the programmed activities
    • Plan, organize and lead opportunities for youth in service, missions, and fellowship, including leading at least one trip per summer (Mission trip, Creation Music Festival, etc.)
  • Communication
    • Communicate with youth, parents, Lead Pastor, and church leadership on a regular basis regarding scheduled activities, goals, and news
    • Communicate and promote children, youth and family ministry offerings to the congregation and larger community through a variety of mediums including social media
  • Administration
    • Prepare and follow an annual budget for Children, Youth and Family Ministries, along with maintaining and ordering supplies and equipment for ministry use
    • Attend church meetings as necessary
    • Meet regularly with Children and Youth Directors/Pastors at other local churches
    • Attend both worship services each Sunday for congregational visibility and relationship-building; participate in worship leadership as requested by Lead Pastor
    • Report to the Lead Pastor; Meet with the Lead Pastor regularly for supervisory review.
