An Epiphany Blessing of Homes and Chalking the Door


The Christian season of Epiphany, celebrating Christ’s revelation to the world, began Jan. 6 and continues until Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, followed by the season of Lent. In some parts of the world, particularly Great Britain, people customarily gather in residences or workplaces (generically called “homes”) to ask God’s blessing on those dwellings and upon all who live, work, and visit there. Here is some information on these gatherings, and suggestions for their use by United Methodist families, churches, and other “homes,” along with a sample liturgy.
