For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.     — Isaiah 9:6 (NRSV)

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
There’s just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus,
Like the fragrance after the rain.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
Let all heaven and earth proclaim.
Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away,
But there’s something about that name. 

This hymn, titled, “There’s Something About that Name,” was written in the 1970s by Gloria and Bill Gaither. My mother used to sing it to me every night before bedtime when I was a child because of the peacefulness of the melody and the deep meaning of words.

The song says how powerful, constant, and comforting the name of Jesus is. The name Jesus encapsulates all that He is and can be for us.

In Isaiah 9:6, there is a prophesy of the birth of Jesus and of the many names that he will be called. This verse names just a few of the countless things that Jesus can be for us in our greatest times of need.

During the Christmas season this can be an important thing to realize. This season can be very difficult for those who have lost loved ones and are going through tough times. Although it may be hard we can take comfort in knowing that when we don’t know what else to do, we can call on the powerful name of Jesus and He will at that moment be our Wonderful Counselor, our Prince of Peace, and anything else that we need Him to be.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for allowing us to see another Advent season. Thank you for sending your son to be our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, and all else that we need him to be. Please comfort those during this time who are struggling and please allow us to be lights for your glory each and every day. In your powerful name we pray, Amen.
