Dear Southeast District,
For 2016, our First Annual One Book: One District will be “Kingdom Come” by Reggie McNeal. Reggie will be here on the Southeast District as the Keynote Speaker for Planting the Seeds for Ministry this October @ Hopewell UMC. Between now and Oct., I invite all clergy and laity of the Southeast District to read “Kingdom Come: Why We Must Give Up Our Obsession with Fixing the Church and What We Should Do Instead.”
Book Discussion: “Kingdom Come” by Reggie McNeal
Reggie will be here on the Southeast District as the Keynote Speaker for Planting the Seeds for Ministry this October 22 at Hopewell UMC. Between now and October 22, District Superintendent Dawn Taylor-Storm will invite all clergy and laity of the Southeast District to read “Kingdom Come: Why We Must Give Up Our Obsession with Fixing the Church and What We Should Do Instead.”
I invite you to this dialogue where we can wrestle with McNeal’s ideas and discern how to practically apply what it means to be a missional church.
Excerpts from “Kingdom Come”:
“Jesus taught us to pray ‘thy kingdom come’ not ‘thy church come.’ The church is a subset of Kingdom activity. The Kingdom is not a subset of church activity. The Kingdom has a much more expansive mission than can be expressed through the institutional church.”
“Church is not a time, a place or a set of prescribed activities. In short, church is not a thing; it s a who. It is the people of God. Everywhere we go, and everything we do, is informed by our relationship with God, just as everything I do (and some things I don’t do) as a husband are informed by my marriage to my wife. I don’t go to my house to be married. I carry my marriage with me everywhere I go.”
The first 30 persons (clergy or laity) to register for one of the book discussions on May 3 will receive a FREE copy of the book (once you sign up, the book will be shipped to the address you provide – please be sure to enter the BEST ADDRESS for receiving the book and make sure it is complete with zip code).
Sign up today for your FREE copy of Reggie’s book and engage in this year’s One Book: One District. Together, let us prayerfully consider what it means to be a part of God’s kingdom building here on the Southeast District.
Together in Ministry,
Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm
