Dr. Lori Wagner presents at the Bi-Vocational and Small Church Network.
The GOAT Church: How to Play the Field, Engage the Crowd, and Build a Winning Team

Dr. Lori Wagner is the current pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, the Acquisitions and Developmental Content Editor for Invite Press, a regular, weekly writer for sermons.com, a ghostwriter for authors of all disciplines, and an adjunct faculty member for writing at Penn State Brandywine. She has taught and mentored pastoral students at Portland Seminary, Wesley Seminary, and Lancaster Theological Seminary. In 2019, she founded a nonprofit, the Society for Faith and Metaphor Studies, to encourage scholars and pastors to examine the role of faith throughout all disciplines. She has written numerous Bible studies and articles, as well as over 400 published sermons. In 2011, she co-authored the novel, The Seraph Seal. Her non-fiction book, Slant: Re-Visioning Scripture comes out in 2023. Her two-year lectionary, The Story Lectionary, has been in circulation internationally since 2015. Her current project, 10 Fairytales of the Church, is in process. Dr. Wagner believes in bringing the Hebrew scriptures to life for contemporary Christians by pointing to the ways that Jesus viewed them and taught them. She believes that the scriptures have much to tell us about the way God sees and values human beings, their beauty, and their complexity. She loves to tell the stories of scripture by looking at people’s emotions, deep desires, faults, and insights. These help us to understand more about ourselves and our role in God’s world. She strongly believes in the power of scripture to heal those inside and outside of the church and that evangelism begins by cultivating “positivity resonance” –understanding peoples’ deepest needs, fears, desires, and wounds and affirming and committing to them as human beings and fellow travelers on the “Way.”
