Never mind Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star game; the real all-stars take the field this Saturday at the EPA Conference UM Men’s annual softball tournament. They’ll begin with devotions at 9 a.m. at Mondauk Commons Park, 1451 Dillon Rd., Ambler. Then after 20 minutes of warm-up, three rounds of simultaneous play on four adjacent softball fields begins at 9:50.
“We’re looking forward to an outstanding day of Christian fellowship, fun and friendly competition,” said UMM President Ross Brightwell.
Facing each other will be men from Bethany UMC in Wescosville, El Redentor & St. Paul’s UMC of Lancaster, Grove UMC of West Chester, Hopewell UMC of Downingtown, Jarrettown UMC of Dresher, New Hanover UMC of Gilbertsville, Kenton UMC from Delaware, and an Assemblies of God church from Wyncote, Pa.
New Hanover UMC won the tournament in 2013, Bethany Wescosville in 2012. The yearly tradition began in 1991.
Families, church members and other spectators are very welcome and should bring their own chairs and blankets, since there are no bleachers. Ample parking is available at the pavilion. Not allowed are dogs and other pets, onsite grilling or cooking, alcohol or bad behavior. But there is, said Brightwell, a very nice playground for kids, plus water fountains, a one-mile walking track and bathrooms.
So come to the park, bring your guests and cheer on the “boys of summer” as they engage in the all-American pastime of church league softball.
