Prayer Request from Bishop Peggy Johnson
This morning Lebanon County District Attorney, David Arnold, announced that a former United Methodist pastor, Arthur (A. B.) Schirmer, is being charged with one count of homicide in the death of Schirmer’s wife, Jewel, in April of 1999.
Mr. Schirmer had formerly served as a licensed local pastor in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church. Beginning in 1970, he served the following appointments: Big Creek: Salem UMC, Lehighton: Ebenezer UMC, Middle Creek: Timothy UMC, Weissport: Ebenezer UMC, Bainbridge: Ludwig UMC, Marietta UMC, and Lebanon: Bethany UMC. Most recently he served Reeders United Methodist Church in Reeders, PA, from 2001 to 2008.
On November 14, 2008, he withdrew from The United Methodist Church under complaint, and surrendered his ministerial credentials (resigned). He is no longer a minister in The United Methodist Church.
We are deeply grieved by Jewel Schirmer’s tragic death which continues to cause so much pain to the family and friends of A.B. and Jewel Schirmer. This continues to be a difficult time for Reeders United Methodist Church, and also for Bethany United Methodist Church in Lebanon where he pastored during the time of Jewel’s death.
We call all people to join us in prayer. Please keep Mr. Schirmer and his family in your prayers. Please also keep Rev. Larry Mark, pastor of Reeders UMC, the Reeders congregation, Rev. Nelson Alleman, pastor of Bethany UMC, the Bethany congregation and community, and all affected by this situation in your prayers. We place our trust in the perfect justice and mercy of God. We are committed to being a community of safety, love, healing and forgiveness.
