New Hanover UMC’s softball team took home the trophy in last year’s 2011 Softball Tournament hosted by Eastern Pennsylvania Conference United Methodist Men.
The 20th Annual EPC UMM Softball Tournament will be held on Saturday, 14 July, at Mondauk Commons Park, Ft. Washington, Pa. This year we are inviting the Pastors of the competing church teams, all District Superintendents, the Bishop and all others interested to attend the Opening and Devotions which will run from 9:00am to 9:30am.
You will find all eight teams gathered around one infield for prayer, hymn singing, scripture and an inspirational message. Following the Devotions, all eight teams will begin playing each other in the four fields that we have reserved.
All teams will play at least three games. Attached is a list of the competing teams and a packet of information on the Tournament to include directions to Mondauk Commons Park. We recommend that you bring a folding chair and a way to shade yourself. You must also provide a cold lunch if you stay for the day. There are restaurants nearby. There are bathrooms, drinking fountains and a playground for toddlers at the Park. Families and fans are most definitely invited and urged to attend!!!
Our EPC UMM Softball Tournament is designed to create Christian fellowship among our UM churches and within our churches. We believe that softball provides an opportunity for our UM churches to reach out to people with a quality, Christian, athletic ministry. While the Tournament is open to co-ed teams, it emphasizes the opportunity to reach out to men, especially young men with the United Methodist Men ministry. The Devotions scripture and message that morning will be delivered by Mr. Clifton Hubbard, Director of the EPC UMM Athletic Ministry, Head Football Coach at Fells High School and retired Athletic Director of the Philadelphia School District.
It is hard to believe that this tournament started 20 years ago. I thank all of the men and women who played over the years. I thank the Jarrettown UMC team for hosting this event each year. I especially thank the Bishop and the EPC staff for their ongoing support.
Remember, the least important objective for the day is winning the championship, come with a Christian heart!!!
