On the evening of Saturday, September 10, Bishop Peggy Johnson, members of the Cabinet, and laity and clergy from across The Northwest District and the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference came together at Lickdale: Trinity United Methodist Church to celebrate the appointment of The Rev. Gary L. Nicholson as Northwest District superintendent.
About 200 persons were able to attend despite many road closings and detours due to recent flooding in the area.
Among them was a very proud Rev. Blake E. Nicholson, Jr. retired elder of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and father of the new superintendent. “I’m proud! I thought his message was wonderful, and a witness to what the Lord has done in his life,” he said. “Too bad Anne (Gary’s mother) didn’t live to see the day. She would have appreciated being there. I think he’ll make a wonderful DS.”
Youth from La Iglesia Metodista Unida Nuevo Nacimiento helped to lead the celebration with vibrant music.
Bishop Peggy Johnson welcomed and introduced Rev. Nicholson as the district superintendent for the Northwest District.
Then clergy and laity from across the district presented Superintendent Nicholson with the symbols of leadership in the faith: a Bible, water, Bread and Cup, Hymnal and Book of Worship, towel and basin, Stole, Book of Discipline, and globe.
The scripture readings included Jeremiah 31: 31-34 and Mark 1: 1-20. Rev. Nicholson preached, his message being “The Good News of Jesus Christ.”
