On Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, Bishop Peggy Johnson of the Philadelphia Area participated in remembrances for those who died in military service to our country.  She traveled to Evangelical United Methodist Church in New Holland, Lancaster County, on the Southwest District.  While there, she offered prayers at a ceremony in the graveyard of the Evangelical UMC, and prior to the service, met privately with parents of a young man who was killed in the line of duty ten years ago who are members of Evangelical UMC.  After participating in a similar service in another church cemetery, she walked with veterans and current members of the armed services to the community park in New Holland where a closing ceremony was held with prayers by the Bishop and words from both a retired serviceman and an aspiring serviceman (a member of West Lawn UMC near Reading) who will be in a college ROTC program in the fall.

Participating with Bishop Johnson in the Memorial Day remembrances were the Bishop’s husband, the Rev. Michael Johnson, the Rev. Eric Ritz, pastor of Evangelical UMC, Mr. Wilbur Horning, Mayor of New Holland and Finance Chair of Evangelical UMC, and District Superintendent Jim Todd of the Southwest District.
