Rev. James Lewis McClendon
Word has been received of the death of the Rev. James Lewis McClendon on Saturday, February 6, 2010. He was born on November 18, 1929 in Texarkana Arkansas, where his home church was Halls Memorial UMC.
Rev. McClendon served the following appointments beginning in 1952: St. John UMC in Spring Lake NJ, Tindley Temple UMC, Philadelphia PA, Ebenezer UMC Snow Hill MD, Janes UMC Brooklyn NY, Trinity (Chelton) UMC Philadelphia PA, Simpson Fletcher UMC Philadelphia PA, Extension Ministry:Chaplain Coordinator, Correctional Ministry, Eastern PA Conference for 16 years and was the founding pastor of St. Matthews UMC in Trevose PA. He was also an educator in The Philadelphia School District and in Worchester County in MD. He served as an officer of Black Methodists for Church Renewal and Black United Methodist Preachers and also was President of the State Chaplains Association.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, and children, Janett McClendon, Theresa Wyche, Jonathan McClendon, Robert McClendon, Peggy Weaver, Sher Wyne Anthony and grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends (daughter Naomi Hill passed away in 1996).
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 10 AM at Wharton Wesley UMC, 5341, Catharine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143. Family and friends are invited to the calling hour beginning at 8AM.
