Cornwall UMC builds counseling center in Tanzania

Thirteen steel roof rafters were fabricated, welded, erected and covered with roofing material by volunteers from Cornwall UMC to build the Family Life Counseling Center in Tanzania.

The members of a relatively small congregation in rural south-central Pennsylvania believe that no task is too big for God.  Almost ten years ago the lives of Lucas and Limi Ndaro intersected with the people of Cornwall United Methodist Church.  Lucas came to nearby Evangelical Theological Seminary on a scholarship to seek his Master of Divinity degree.  Soon after he arrived he was invited to attend Cornwall church and the congregation welcomed him as family.  They soon agreed to help bring Lucas’ wife Limi and their two sons to the U.S. and adopted the family as missionaries to Tanzania.

Congo Mission: Hope for health and hunger

Nutrition for children is the main focus of the Mpasa Nutrition Center and Clinic, which the Congo Partnership team visited, is a ministry of the United Methodist Church, and feeds about 350 children and their families.

Imagining No Malaria

Lynda Commale, a member of Hopewell UMC in Downingtown, PA, took part in a nets distribution in Uganda in 2009.

Imagining…No Malaria

Can you imagine a world where every mosquito bite could lead to a hospital visit or worse…death?   Mosquito bites pose a serious threat to families in sub-Saharan Africa.  In fact, with an annual death toll of more than 1 million, malaria kills enough people every month to fill Citizens Bank Park (capacity 43,647)….twice.

United Methodist Bishop Thomas Bickerton, Imagine No Malaria chairperson, describes it as “Nets Plus.”  Through the work of The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), we will establish community-based health workers, improve hospitals and clinics and work with African communities to wipe out mosquito breeding areas.

Bishop Johnson requests offering for Pakistan

The world has experienced another major natural disaster.  This time there are devastating floods in Pakistan.  Many are in risk of contracting water-borne diseases and the number of people affected by this tragedy has risen to 20 million.   The United Methodist Committee on Relief has already sent $75,000 but so much more is needed. As United Methodists we know that 100% of every dollar given goes directly to the need and the overhead of our relief agency is covered by our apportionment dollars.  Please take an offering for our sisters and brothers in Pakistan.  Send donations to the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Office, P.O. Box 820, Valley Forge, PA  19482-0820, and it will be forwarded to the UMCOR Advance #3982450 on your behalf.

For more information on the United Methodist Committee on Relief and its response to the Pakistan floods, go to: www.umcor.org.

Africa University: Thriving in Zimbabwe

2009 Annual Report – Africa University Thriving in Zimbabwe

Africa University has many stories to tell – to the nations of Africa, and the world.  During Zimbabwe’s economic and political struggles of recent years, United Methodist-related Africa University continued to educate leaders for all of Africa. For a time in 2009, it was the only institution of higher education in Zimbabwe open for classes. We celebrated our 3,000th graduate with the 2009 graduating class.

In the 2009-2010 academic year, our 1,100 students represented 28 African countries. We have a substantial waiting list of students eager to attend on campus or through our emerging distance-learning curriculum.
