Why should a church have an endowment fund?
It provides a place for people to give. The number one obstacle to giving is that donors don’t know that there is a place to give. Less than 4% of Americans think to leave money to their church in their will.
It tells people that the church is here to stay! It helps the church provide for its future - we all have retirement funds - an endowment fund is the same thing, only in perpetuity! It gets the church organized. The number two reason people don’t give is because they don’t know what will happen to their money. A formal endowment policy removes that obstacle.
How do we get started?
Create an endowment task force - either through the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee or Administrative Council.
Work through the attached questionnaire to think about what you want the endowment to do for your church.
Call the Foundation at 800-828-9093 to have someone come meet with your committee to answer questions and talk specifics.
Write a formal, but simple, endowment policy to be approved by your local charge conference. Click here for sample endowment policies.
